Five Reasons to Bring Your Heart To Work

Take a right at any time. Get a sheet of paper and a pencil or pen.

Yes, do this right now before you continue reading.

Then draw a tree. When you have finished your tree, you can read below.

After doing this with groups before I can say with some certainty what you see in front of you.

If you're like most people you will have designed a wonderful tree from the point of view of the ground up.

This tree has much in common with many people who see in the workplace worldwide. You see the tree from the ground up, and you see the physical presence of people in the workshop in their cubicles and offices.

Did you know that in many parts of the world the amount of biomass of the roots of a tree is at least as much as what you see on the surface? In other words, when we are faced with a tree, we are literally only see half.

So it is with people. There is much more to us than it can be seen. Unfortunately too many people choose to bring their physical self (the hands), and even their own mind (head) to work (if not likely that they would not work for long), but leaves a huge portion - their own emotional (the heart) at home.

What to bring to everyday work with you? If you do not put your heart, you're missing huge opportunities. Here are five reasons why you should bring your whole self, including the heart, to work every day.

You have more energy. There is a strip of energy flow of primary importance when disconnecting our emotions when we leave for work. Our hearts can provide a deep reservoir can draw if we have a belief in what we are doing. This should not be a flow of energy as well though. When we are fully engaged in our work we have to use more energy, but more flowing back to us.

You will be healthier. When you bring your whole self to your efforts will be amply repaid in more than energy alone. That energy will translate into better health.

You will have more enthusiasm. Dale Carnegie said, "and act enthusiastic you will be thrilled." It 's true. The enthusiasm does not come from our hands or head. The enthusiasm comes from our heart. Forget your passions! Let your enthusiasm for a show of project! You will be amazed at how this can change your entire outlook and performance at work.

You can do more. Think about it. When you do more, when you look at the list of activities and breathe a heavy sigh, or when you're jazzed about a particular project? You know the answer. What is the difference? Your heart and soul. There is no doubt that there will be more productive, alone, in a team or when the other leaders if you put your heart into your work.

You'll have more fun. I left for last because it is something, unfortunately too many people do not think is possible. It is not that if you take only half of your tree work. But when you become involved fully with your work, you can find great opportunities for fun.

I am suggesting that we all become workaholics? Not at all. In fact, quite the opposite. When we take ourselves fully to our work, and get all the benefits above we probably will not work. You can work more, but we will certainly work better. And we'll all enjoy it more.

James Patrick Dunne wrote a poem that became the lyrics of a song recorded by Kenny Rogers, and is the official USA Gymnastics Olympic Theme Song. The chorus sums up why you should bring your heart to work every day ...

When you put your heart into it

Can take you anywhere

Who can say that we can not do

It 'the same dream that we share

When you put your heart into it

Can take you anywhere
